Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information

At Riverview Infant School we strive to support all children to enable them to achieve their best at school.

In order to do this successfully, many steps are taken to support our pupils through their learning journey.

Quality first teaching is essential; however for some children there are occasions when further additional support may be required .

We have a dedicated team who support children. Information regarding how we support pupils and the type of interventions we can offer can be found in our policy for SEN and our SEN Information Report and there is also information on the New Code of Practice.

Both of these can be found in the tabs below, but if you have a concern, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Together we can make a real difference to the opportunities your child can enjoy.

Our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) is Ms Garrard and she can be contacted at

Wellbeing at Riverview Infant School

‘A child learns best when they have strong self-esteem, a sense of belonging and resilience.’

Children’s happiness, well-being and security is our number on priority.

At Riverview Infant School we buy in a Play Therapist for one day a week to support pupils who need support.

We have a lunchtime Nurture Club where small groups of children can attend enabling them to be supported using the principals of nurture,  We have a designated learning area known as our Star Centre which can be used for individuals  or small groups.   We are well aware of the importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing.

The school has developed a successful Mindfulness programme where Mindful Mouse teaches strategies to support anxiety.   Please look out for our talks to parents on Anxiety, Mindfulness and Behaviour which could support you in the home setting,

Speech and Language Support

At Riverview Infant School we believe that by focussing on communication skills across the school we are able to identify and meet the needs of children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).  We know that a greater understanding and emphasis on

communication in the classroom and school can have a positive impact on pupils with Special Educational Needs as well as SLCN.  We are aware that limited communication difficulties with speaking and listening can be a huge barrier to a child’s learning.

We buy in a Speech and Language Therapist for one morning a week to support pupils.  We have trained a number of teaching assistants who work closely with the Senco and class teachers to identify any children with speech and language difficulties and screen children using the Speech Link and Language Link programs.

Speech Link and Language Link are assessment tools specifically designed to identify speech and language needs across our school.

Children’s comprehension skills (understanding spoken language of others), expressive skills (ability to talk fluently) and speech (articulation—sounds we make saying words). Our Sen TA team then works with small groups of individuals in implementing  interventions to support children’s

development in these areas.

We  work with the Local Authority Speech and Language Therapists

implementing strategies recommended.

We have introduced all children to Makaton and use this throughout the school for example in assemblies and to support communication skills.
