Guided Reading

Each class has three 15-20 minute Guided Reading sessions per week. The children are grouped by Phonic ability, and each week have a book matched to their phonic level. Each group is supported by an adult for all three sessions. The children have the same book for all three sessions.

Session 1 focuses on decoding the text using their phonic knowledge.

Session 2 focuses on Prosody, which is expression and intonation.

Session 3 focuses on Comprehension.

The aim is that by the end of the week children can read the book fluently and also understand the texts they have read. We have purchased new books linked to the Little Wandle Programme which will be used in these sessions.

We teach Phonics following the Little Wandle Programme. Below is the overview for Reception and Year One showing what is taught in each term.

Phonics is taught through daily 20-30 minute sessions. Catch-up sessions are delivered to groups and individuals following assessment by Class Teachers.
